Independence Day
July 11, 2011
This was the first year Eddie and I spent the 4th of July as a family and with his parents. This year, Independence Day took on a whole new meaning for me, a much deeper meaning. Eddie's parents, his dad's cousin and his wife came walking into the house in full red, white and blue. It was so cute. I was focused on the details of our BBQ and the beach, but suddenly I stopped. And I thought, "Wow, this day must really mean something to them."
Eddie's parents came over from Cuba very young and have had great freedom here in America for many years. Of course my freedom and our country mean so much to me, but it just hit me how thankful his parents and family are. They are proud to be wearing our country's colors. I was actually moved to tears in that instant; having this whole realization in my head...I really had a moment. I never told anyone actually, I just walked away for a minute to gather myself. I know our country isn't where we'd all like to see it at this moment, but we are very lucky people to have the freedom we have.
To the men and women who leave their families behind and fight for our freedom and protect it on a daily basis-I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart, and the bottom of my family's hearts. I will celebrate our country on every 4th of July a little differently for the rest of my life.
